Beyond the Mat

In this discussion based class we will be exploring topics surrounding the yoga community and practice. This will include everything from the yoga sutras to practicing ethically. We’ll look at the connections of yoga to colonization, issues within the yoga community, the evolution of the practice from its roots, what being a yogi off the mat looks like, and more. The topics, resources, and discussions will be tailored to the interests of the group. These resources will vary from articles, podcasts, and short documentaries to try to be inclusive of all types of learners. All resources you will be asked to use will be available for free online. We’ll look at one resource each week and bring our thoughts to the group on Monday evening for discussion. Similar to a book club.

What’s the difference between cultural appropriation and appreciation?

Before reading the article please take a moment to think about and reflect (Potentially in a written form or just in your head) on what your stance is on if yoga is cultural appropriation? Do you feel that white people practicing and teaching yoga is potentially harmful to people of color, specifically those of Indian descent and heritage?

Additionally, please take note of any information given on the identity of the author as well as the date published.

While reading the article please write down any thoughts or questions that come to mind.

After reading please reflect on these things as they are what we will be discussing when we meet.

What pieces of “commercialization” of yoga have you taken part in? What was your thought process around it when you were taking part in it?

Do you feel like the yoga community is doing enough to address this issue? If not, what else would you like to see?

Reflect on what to you feels like cultural appreciation and what feels like cultural appropriation. What are your feelings on this distinction?

Take the time to reflect on the questions listed in the bottom of the article

Elemental Yin

Elemental Yin: Coming Out of Winter

A 200 hour YTT Graduation

w/ Christina Morris

Winter is the season of stillness and is tied to the water element. Winter symbolizes the deep stillness of nature, and you are invited to look deep within and connect to your inner being.

In this Yin offering we’ll work with the water meridians of the body: the kidneys and urinary bladder. Water is the essential nature/essence found in everything and we’ll work with this energy to release that which lies beneath the surface. Using guided breathwork, simple meditation and lots of props, we’ll focus on opening these spaces and being witness to what shows up.

All people welcome, by donation only, celebrate Christina and her certification with Rise + Vibe!

Qi (energy or life force)

Movements are simple and easy to follow.

Classes are led by acupuncturist, Pamela Kentish, who has been leading Qi gong classes for two decades, and is a long time practitioner of the movement and healing arts.

No experience necessary. All are welcome. Drop-ins are welcome...

Learn the basics of tuning in & tapping into the energy of the Chakras.

We will work with mantras, warm up & practice a specific series of moving postures designed to tap into our energy centers & utilize the magnetic energy of the planets.

Practitioners often wear a head covering while practicing to help contain the energy in the body. If you would like to bring a scarf to cover your head it may be helpful, but not necessary.

Learn to LOVE inverting your body. This workshop is for all yogis, new to well-seasoned, who are open to fresh perspectives about being upside down. A favorite among Grateful Yogis including myself, I am stoked to offer this workshop again before I head to Yoga KIte Camp for the winter!!

-Chrissy

What to bring:

  • A sweat towel or bandanna. Not just for sweat, but also for various exercises on approaching certain inversions.
